Charlie Colin has died. Anybody slightly familiar with radio rock happened to catch an earful of his bass licks in the last couple of decades, as his former band Train pumped out some numbers that received radio play.
In respect to his time as an entertainer for most millennials and boomers, here is a few of his favorite look. A t-shirt and a sport coat. Total smart casual, leaning heavily on the casual by virtue of
jeans
graphic t-shirts
beanies
fedoras
chains
long-ish unkempt hair
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
As per the blog’s tradition, most formal to least formal, is the order of outfits.
His most clean-cut look. The pocket square is a fine touch of adding effervescence to this V-neck t-shirt and sport coat look.
Do away with a pocket square but add a metal chain? The latter downgrades the look a casual step down. You do know by now that pinstriped suits rank higher in formality than plain suits, and the same applies to sport jackets.
A pinstripe suit in third position? That’s because with all the performance-sweat, this is just uncomfortable for body-heat regulation and keeping away bad odor. Nice consideration, however.
A spicy pocket square. An informal trucker hat. The hat fits his occupation, but between it and a beret, the idea of a much dressed up casual take hats-wise, is clearly evident.
Were it not for the necktie scarf/neckerchief being up higher on his throat, creating a clear division of his neck, this look would rank higher up. It would have been superbly stylish to have it at the neck’s baseline, where the shirt’s neckline is. And a fedora is dressier than a capped hat.
Colors do determine an outfit’s formality. The deep brown fedora is more formal than the light-colored one above. Cream yellow? Macaroon? Pastel butter? Sand brown? Whatever color the fedora accompanied by neckerchief, it is too summerly as compared to the one in the picture above. The only reason this outfit is less formal is a presence of graphics on his t-shirt.
Same energy is radiating from both fits. Black and white are neutral colors, which serve different roles when it comes to lower layer garments like t-shirts. Albeit white is naturally cheery, a black t-shirt dulls a dark outfit. This evens them. The graphics are keeping everything casual, natch.
I love me a good dressy summer outfit. That’s my weakness. This striped summer jacket with a pocket-square in complementing pattern, still in summer color (orange) leaves me so content. The t-shirt, either graphic or not, is in the right place. Don’t you admit he looks good? Boutonnieres for added effect. Or call it extra flair.
Same outfit as above, different pocket square. The beanie is a little too casual. Even though it matches one boutonniere.
Condolences to his family.
